ViewRanger Great Britain provides OS LandRanger 1:50,000 scale mapping for all of Great Britain. Delivered on DVD the product consisting of the ViewRanger software and Mapping Data and is compatible with most Symbian and Android handsets.
ViewRanger™ is a unique mapping, navigation, tracking, and information tool for mobile phones that provides information about your immediate surroundings through a natural and intuitive display. ViewRanger transforms your Android or Symbian based smartphone into a fully featured trail navigation system.
The software is also available for iPhones through iTunes. Click here for the iPhone version.
ViewRanger is ideal for tourists, walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers, horse riders, geocachers, river boaters - in fact anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
ViewRanger is used by outdoor enthusiasts and occasional tourists alike. Dedicated Outdoor GPS receivers are typically expensive and offer only a basic map display with limited information and no connectivity. ViewRanger is the first solution to combine high quality topographic maps, off-road GPS navigation, panoramic viewpoint maps, and location-based content sharing in an integrated, simple to use application running on smartphones. This is the perfect navigation solution when hill walking and through national parks.
ViewRanger allows you to access free open street maps or open cycle maps (GPRS or 3G connection required, currently only compatible with Symbian device) as well as ViewRangers own premium topographical maps. Using both these mapping systems allows you to use the software in a car or on foot. You can switch between the topographical and open maps during the same route with the track splitting at the point where they switched.
What You Need
 |
ViewRanger requires a compatible mobile phone. It identifies your location automatically using the internal GPS built in to your phone (or on Symbian phones can use a Bluetooth GPS receiver). You can view maps and enter locations without a GPS too. To access information associated with points-of-interest, to use the Buddy Beacon or to access the ViewRanger server, you need a GPRS or 3G internet subscription from your mobile network provider. |
GlobalSat Trackers
This software, when used with phones running the Symbian OS, can also be used in conjunction with our Globalsat TR102 personal tracker and Globalsat TR151 vehicle tracker. By adding the Globalsat trackers to your ViewRanger buddy list you can locate, watch in real time, and even set up geo fences (TR151 only). A geo fence allows you to monitor a predetermind area based on GPS coordinates. If a tracker moves outside this zone you will be alerted. This can come in handy if you need to keep an eye on the where abouts of staff, children or the elderly etc. It has also been used with the Duke of Edinburgh Award initiatives.
You can also use Viewranger to communicate via SMS with the Globalsat personal and vehicle trackers and control the frequency and type of reports it sends. ViewRanger will let you know via a custom message if your tracker has a low battery, if the Geo Fence has been breached or the SOS button has been pressed, showing the position that this was pressed on a map. This will raise an alarm flag which it will continue to report until you clear the alarm.
As ViewRanger uses both street maps and Topographical maps this allows you to find the position of the tracker on detailed maps. This can be used as a way to locate you when out walking.
Please note: In order to use the tracker with ViewRanger software both the Mobile phone and the Globalsat tracker needs a GPS and GPRS signal. This feature is not yet available for the iPhone or Android based handsets |
